Obituary of Daniel J. McCarthy

Dan McCarthy, 70, of Aberdeen, passed away Friday, September 26, at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City after a brief illness. He was born June of 1938 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and grew up in Watertown, NY. He and his wife, Virginia, have lived in Aberdeen for forty-four years and raised their six children here. Dan was a 1959 graduate of Fordham University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He joined the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1959 and and retired from the Army Reserve as a Major in 1975. Dan was an actuary, first with Equitable Life, then from 1972 to present, with Milliman & Robertson, now called Milliman, Inc., one of the world's largest independent actuarial and consulting firms. He was well-known and respected in his field, having served as President of the American Academy of Actuaries and Chairman of Milliman. He also advanced his profession by serving on the Actuarial Standards Board for six years. Dan recently focused his considerable energy as President of the Actuarial Foundation, a philanthropic group that aims to harness the talents of actuaries to serve the public. Dan was very actively involved at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church for decades, having served on the Parich Council as President and as Chair of the Finance Comittee, taught religious education courses, participated in the bridge league, and added his strong voice to the folk group. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, to whom he was married for 49 years, and their children, Deirdre Gelinne and her husband Dave, Daniel III and his wife Melissa, Justin and his wife Tracy, Anne Knight and her husband Steven, Judith and her husband Mike Walsh, and Elizabeth, as well as fifteen grandchildren: Daniel IV, Margaret, Christopher, Katherine, Brian, Caroline, Jack, Olivia, J.T., Thomas, Andrew, Robbie, Harry, Elizabeth, and Justin. Dan is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Daly, and her husband Bob, and many nieces and nephews. Dan wrote in his letter of resignation to the Army, 'I leave with a host of memories and no regrets.' The same can be said of how he lived his life. Friends and relatives may pay their respects from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Tuesday, September 30, at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am Wednesday at St. Benedict Roman Chatolic Church in Holmdel. Burial will follow at Holmdel Cemetery, Holmdel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Mercy First Scholarship Fund, 525 Convent Road, Syosset, NY 11791 (www.mercyfirst.org).
