Andy and Carol,
I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. She was an amazing and inspiring woman and I'm thankful that our paths crossed when it did. It's comforting to know that Ginger has your mom to tuck her in her dog bed now.

Dr. Chen opened the doors of science to me and changed my life. She was a talented teacher that connected with her students and made learning and understanding easy! Her kindness extended beyond the classroom, for she was an amazing soul. I had the gift of getting to know her well enough to be welcomed into her home and to be allowed to baby sit her children a few times. Some of my fondest memories include Dr. Chen and being in her classes. My deepest sympathy go out to her family and friends. Thank you for sharing her with so many of us at HHS. She was a unique gift to this world and will be missed.

Dr. Chen was one of the most amazing and motivating teachers I have ever known. I think of her often and smile at how she made learning fun. In 1975 she taught a small group of us BASIC programming. She was way ahead of her time! A very sweet and dear woman. My condolences to your family for your loss. She left this earth making it a better place.

Dr. Chen was a dedicated and effective educator, and I’ll never forget her tough love and wry sense of humor. She prepared us well for the AP Chemistry exam and beyond, and I feel fortunate to have been one of her many, many students. My sincere condolences to her family.

I worked with Vera for many years. I enjoyed her intellect, sense of humor and strong work ethic. It was a terrible shock when her husband died, but Vera rose to the challenge of raising her children, managing money and taking care of her home. I knew she was very sad and feeling alone, but she just kept going, doing her job. I loved Vera’s humor. The real science kids credited her with giving them a solid foundation. Vera will be missed, but not forgotten.

I was not a student in any of her classes but I could overhear her class as she was right next to mine in what was an open space where no walls separated the different classes. I can recall one time when she was an integral and important part of an impromptu science curriculum, which covered all the science disciplines at school on nuclear weapons after one nation conducted an above ground nuclear test in my Freshman year. She was an integral part of the science teaching staff that made sure we were fully aware of the science behind thermonuclear weapons. I was impressed with her professionalism and her belief that we as high school students growing to be citizens should be fully informed about these weapons that could end all life so that we could have a future.

I have many fond memories of chemistry class and physics class with Mrs. Chen. I always loved when she caught the boys off-guard with a bit of her personal history (like learning to shoot a gun) and she had fantastic aim with a piece of chalk when someone needed to wake up. Holmdel students were blessed to have her. She remains one of my favorite teachers from my years at HHS. My sincerest sympathies to her family.

I am very sorry for your loss! My prayers are with you and your whole family!
I had Dr. Chen as a Chemistry Teacher in high school over 30 years ago. She was one of my absolute favorites! She was sweet, kind and very interested in teaching but making sure you understood what she was teaching. I remember she was so happy for me when I got my drivers license and told me I should look into getting a Volvo - for it's safety features.
She was amazing and helped me enjoy Chemistry. I think of her whenever I see a Volvo. She was a kind, sweet soul!!
