Obituary of William R. Satz

DR. WILLIAM R. SATZ, 85, of Colts Neck NJ passed away on Monday, June 28th, 2010 at Riverview Medical Center, in Red Bank. Born in Newark, NJ in 1924, he lived there and then in Elizabeth prior to moving to Colts Neck in 1967. He graduated from Newark’s Weequahic High School in 1942. He then served his country during World War II as a Combat Medic in the U.S.Army in Company B, of the 104th Infantry Timberwolf Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart in Germany and the Silver Star for “Gallantry in Action”. Profoundly influenced by his experience in World War II, Bill became convinced that education – knowledge and truth transmitted with integrity within a moral structure represents the most effective weapons in any nations arsenal. Bill was awarded his B.A. degree Magnum Cum Laude from Seton Hall University majoring in English and History. His Masters degree was awarded by N.Y.University in the fields of Guidance and Psychology. His Doctorate was earned at Rutgers University in the fields of Educational Supervision. His career included seventeen years of service with the Elizabeth Board of Education, the last eight years of which were as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He was particularly proud of his years of coaching track and field at Thomas Jefferson High School. He left the Elizabeth Board of Education to accept the position of Superintendent of Freehold Regional High School District. During his tenure there, he was responsible for overseeing the construction and making operational three new high schools. His next venture was to be Superintendent of the Holmdel Township School District where with others he helped transform, that district from a K-8 school district to a K-12 entity. Upon his retirement in 1985, the Board of Education paid tribute to his service by renaming its Intermediate School “The William R. Satz School”. His retirement in 1985 was followed by service as Interim Superintendent in several districts including Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, and East Brunswick. He also worked as a coordinator at the Center for Math, Science, and Computer Education at Rutgers University where he coordinated projects between local school districts and the Center in these disciplines. When he left Rutgers, he was granted Emeritus status. Bill was devoted to his wife and to his entire family. H e was particularly fond of gardening, and being close to the ocean and to nature. He was an avid sports fan, his favorites being the Boston Red Sox, Notre Dame football, Seton Hall basketball, and track and field events. He also was fond of Turner Classic movies, and had a real sweet tooth, particularly for ice cream and cookies. He was a true gentleman, and he will be sorely missed. Dr. Satz was predeceased by a son William R. Satz Jr, in 2003. he is survived by his wife of 60 years to whom he was devoted , Rose Hanley Satz , his sons Peter J. and Thomas G., daughters Maureen E. and Karen, and his grandchildren Stephen and Andria. A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Dr. Satz will be offered on Thursday July 1st, 2010 at 9:00 A.M. St. Marys’ R.C.Church . Highway 34 at Phalanx Road, Colts Neck, NJ.
