I was hired by Dr. Satz to teach in Village School in 1974. I remember him as a true professional who appreciated the efforts of each teacher. He was supportive, friendly, and most of all, sincere in his interactions with staff. Holmdel was so fortunate to have him as their leader for many years.

July 8, 2010 As soon as I spotted the photo of Bill in the Asbury Park Press, I was reminded fondly of my three years as a member of the Holmdel Board of Education. During that period, Bill came to Holmdel to follow in the footsteps of the previous superintendent, who turned out to be a divisive force on the Board. I always thought Bill’s great strength was that he was a unifying force – he played no favorites, and treated us all equally. When a later Board decided to honor Bill by naming the Intermediate School after him, I was in full agreement. It’s been years since I saw Bill, but I’ve thought about him from time to time. I went back to Bell Labs after I left the Board, retired from there eventually, and now participate in the computer end of the local elections. Please accept my sincere sympathy on his passing. Bill Satz was a fine person. Sincerely, Ruth Lewart

Dear Satz Family, We didn’t realize how lucky we were at the time to have had Dr. Satz as our superintendent back in the early days of the Holmdel School District. It has only been with time that his brilliance came to light in my life as my children had the good fortune to attend the school which I was able to participate in the formation as a member of the first graduating class of 1974. It was a great honor in 2006 to record his legacy during the taping of “Coming Home Again.” This DVD will enable future generations at Holmdel High School to enjoy his presence and philosophy of education which I hope all can learn from. Michael V. Pomarico, Class of 1974

My Dear Satz Family, Our deepest condolences to you all. David, Carly, Evan and I are thinking of you in this profoundly sorrowful time. I have such fond memories of the patriarch of the Satz family. I was always so welcomed into your home and especially by Dr. Satz. There was so much love and laughter, warmth and caring. He got a kick out of me and I adored him. A rare mix of intellect and humor and the most devoted father. He will remain in my heart always. His suffering is over, his legacy lives on. Celebrate his life and cherish the memories. Our love and our thoughts are with you, Janet

Dear Rose and the Satz Family, It was with great sadness that we learned of Bill's passing. He had an indelible impact on our careers and the entire Holmdel family. Having read his philosophy of education, honed in the horrors of war, it is clear this great man acted on what he believed. We are so grateful that we were able to chronicle this wise man's perspectives in 2006 when we filmed "Coming Home Again" at Holmdel High School. The school he helped build was going through a crisis in leadership, and though ailing, he courageously stepped forward and I think, helped steer us back onto the right path. Bless you Dr. Satz- you will be missed.

To the Satz Family- I worked with and for Bill Satz for more than a decade in the early days of Holmdel High School. Whenever we needed guidance, someone to give sound advice, and who could stay the course, even in the more turbulent times- it was Bill Satz. Bill was of the 'old school'; you took him at his word. That smile he had, and his all-knowing look, and his reassuring "this, too, shall pass", got us through the rough patches. Bill Satz was a kind, gentle man, an educator of the first order, who believed that teachers were the best ones to teach, and administrators who were worth anything, knew when to stand aside and let education take place. He never had an unkind word, no matter what the situation. I have worked with many Superintendents of school in my thirty-five years in public education, and Bill Satz stands alone as a leader with integrity and true dedication. We will all miss Bill, but we are, without exception, better individuals, having worked at his side.

Dear Rose and family, I am deeply grateful for the two decades of professional and personal time that I shared with Bill. From the very first moment he took the time and called my home personally in 1976 to offer me a position at Holmdel, and the many hours over the years we spent discussing grievances and negotiating labor relations issues, Bill was always the consummate gentleman and truest of educators. May he rest in peace, Doug Sanecki

Dear Rose & family... I was so saddened to learn yesterday of Bill's passing. While he now enjoys a far better quality of existence, those remaining must bear his loss. He was boss, counselor, and friend to me; his wisdom, calmness, and patience (maybe really forebearance) carried us all through many difficult days. I admired his intelligence, his wit, his mastery of literary allusions and coinage of metaphors, his philosophic outlook and foresight, and most certainly, his kindness, a gentleman through and through. His Creator endowed him richly, and he reciprocated by giving much in return. May he rest in a well deserved peace (but continue to watch over us).

Dr.Satz was a gentleman both in and out of the classroom. He stepped up to the plate and made Holmdel one of the top schools in the state. I personally am saddened by his passing. For many years after the school was named for him, he would show up at the school to let peple know he was still around. You have left many of us with fond memories.

MAUREEN and the Satz family, I simply wished to express my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your father. Bill Satz was a hero to many of the Administrators who have worked in Public Education for the past 40-50 years. I genuinely admired your father as a "trailblazer" who represented Parents, Children, and Educators in every aspect of his leadership for so many schools. His passing is a milestone in New Jersey. I hope you are well, Maureen, and take care of your family. Respectfully, DANIEL J. LANE

I was deeply saddened, this morning, to learn of Bill's passing. I owe him a great deal. It was he who appointed me as the first principal of Marlboro High School and who gave so much support to our efforts to make it a school of which we could all be proud. He always set the example as to what an effective administrator should be. When I retired as principal of Livingston High School in 1986, Bill came up to attend my retirement dinner. I considered him a mentor, a friend and one of the finest human beings I had ever met. Wherever he was and wherever he worked, he changed things for the better. He will be missed by all who knew him. I extend my deepest and most hearfelt sympathy to his family.

I had Mr. Satz for History in the 40's at Thomas Jefferson H.S. He was only out of the Army a few years, and he made History so interesting relating to us some of his WW II experiences. I had heard after he left Jeff he went up the ladder in education, but didn't realize just how far he went. My condolences to his Wife, Children, and Grandchildren.
