I first met Ed in 1969, when I joined as a new hire at (then) Esso Research and Engineering, Florham Park, NJ. Ed shared an office with Jack Turney, as two group leaders they ruled their roost of experienced and new hires. Ed would listen in as I explained a problem to Jack. Ed always had a sense of humor, especially since I was a new hire and from the 60's generation who wore different than traditional clothes to the office. Ed's humor always centered around working his grounds, and about farm animals. He liked the leather belt I wore to work one day -- it was made of rawhide, and he told me it would last forever like it did on the horses (it did, but my stomach expanded!). A real gentlemen whose expertise in refractories was known far and wide before such experts existed. He was always nice to me, offering advice or just good humor. Ed, may you rest in peace.
