Obituary of Mary A. Formisano
Mary A. Formisano (nee Longo) 'Nanny', 90, of Holmdel, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 14, 2014. She was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, one of ten. After graduating from Lincoln High School, Mary worked at Colgate, and then at the Department of Defense (or as she called it…The War Department). She held a confidential position and got many commendations. In 1960, Mary took the Civil Service Exam and was one of the first eight females to be hired by the U.S. Postal Service in Jersey City. Later on, out of 1300 employees, Mary was the first female to be promoted. She proudly worked there for 25 years and was a Postal Data Technician until her retirement. She finally moved to Holmdel in 1987 to be with her daughter and her family. Today, Mary was still quite active. She took daily walks on the treadmill, did crossword puzzles, and shopped at Costco and ShopRite. She enjoyed cooking, wine, the outdoors, and going out to eat. She watched the news every day and kept up with current events. She loved playing solitaire and doing word games while watching classic movies. Most of all, she loved philosophy and basic theology. She was an inspiring story teller who shared her memories and positive words of wisdom, while also being a great listener. Mary was a believer who always said 'every cloud has a silver lining'. She was a selfless individual, and a hard worker, who always put others first and never liked to say good-bye. She always said so long. 'So long Nanny…take care of yourself!' Mary will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by those she left behind. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Anna Longo, and her eight brothers and sister: Frank and wife Rose, John and wife Adele, Fran and husband Bill, Moe and wife Mary, Rocco and wife Joan, Nick, Tony, and Angelo. Surviving are her daughter Michele Coyle and her husband John, her two grandchildren Michele and John and his fiancé Allison, her sister Virginia Nihen, her sister-in-law and friend Eleanor Longo, and many extended family and caring friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 18, 2014, from 4-8pm and 10:00am on Friday at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26-South Holmdel Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held to celebrate Mary's life on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 11:15am at St. Benedict R.C. Church, 165 Bethany Rd., Holmdel.
