Obituary of Jean Phuros
Jean Phuros, 97, of Aberdeen, peacefully entered eternal rest with the Lord on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Bayshore Health Care Center in Holmdel, NJ where she resided for the last 7 years. Jean was born December 5, 1912 in Mytilene, Greece to the late Demetrious and Efstratia Scampavia. She came to the United States in 1921. She was a graduate of Manhattan Industrial High School and worked as a seamstress before marrying her beloved husband the late Thomas Phuros in 1948. Jean lived in Manhattan, Queens, Hempstead and Elmont, NY before moving to Aberdeen 25 years ago. While living in Hempstead, she was an active member of The Cathedral of St. Paul, Hempstead, NY where she was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society serving on the board of Trustees and many committees for many years. After moving to NJ in 1985, she was a beloved member of Kimisis tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Homdel, NJ where her Son-in law, Fr. George Dounelis is the pastor. She was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos, BAHA Chapter and the Primetimes for many years. She was a regular fixture in the boutique tent at the annual festival. Jean was a generous, loving person who was always eager to help those less fortunate. Her house was always open and she hosted many family members when they arrived from Greece, including her nephews, Louis Phuros, Arthur Katsafouros, and Steve Katsafouros who lived with her for many years and affectionately called her Mom. She was also Mitera (mother) to an exchange student from Argentina, Adolpho Szychowski who was a part of the family for a year. Her home was the traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve house for family and friends for many happy years. Her home was always full of the laughter of her children�s many friends and the Party location for all. She was the perfect YiaYia (grandma in Greek) and was known as YiaYia not only to her grandchildren but to their many friends. She will be greatly missed by all. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister Stephanie Katsoulis and her husband Efthimios, her brother in law Michael Ftaclas, and her Godson Peter Ayanopoulos. She is survived by her loving children Kathryn Dounelis and her husband Fr. George, and Demetrious Phuros. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Nicole Phuros and her partner Jessie Pignataro, Gina Dounelis, Gregory Phuros, and Athas Dounelis, her adoring Great-Grandson Georgie, and her sister Athena Ftaclas. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and extended family and friends. Visitation will be at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Rd, Holmdel, NJ 07733 on Monday, May 17 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. There will also be viewing at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 22 Hillcrest Rd., Holmdel, NJ at 10 AM on Tuesday, May 18 followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, LI, NY. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, PO Box 367, Holmdel, NJ 07733.
