Obituary of Robert J. Flanagan
ROBERT J. FLANAGAN, OF HOLMDEL, N.J., DIED SUNDAY, MARCH 8, 2009 AT BAYSHORE HOSPITAL, HOLMDEL, N.J. ROBERT WAS BORN IN ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND LIVED IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI AND NEW JERSEY MOST OF HIS LIFE. ROBERT WAS A MEMBER OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FOR 51 YEARS HAVING BEEN INITIATED IN THE FIRST DEGREE OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI COUNCIL# 527 ON NOVEMBER 19, 1957. HE SUBSEQUENTLY JOINED THE DANIEL McCORMICK COUNCIL #1831 IN SOUTH ORANGE N.J. AND SERVED AS GRAND KNIGHT AT THAT COUNCIL FROM 1983-1984. ROBERT THEN SERVED AS FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR FROM 1984-1985. ROBERT DEDICATED A MAJOR PORTION OF HIS LIFE TO ACTIVITIES SPONSORED BY THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. HE PARTICULARLY ENJOYED FUND RASING ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN, THE POOR, AND EDUCATION OF SEMINARIANS. HE WAS PROUD OF HIS RECORD IN ATTENDING 40 ANNUAL RETREATS AT THE REDEMPTORIST SAN ALFONSO RETREAT HOUSE IN WEST END , N.J. HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A GENERAL TECHNICIAN AT THE WALTER KIDDE COMPANY IN BELLEVILLE, N.J. HE WAS A PARISHIONER OF ST. BENEDICT'S CHURCH, HOLMDEL, N.J. HE WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS PARENTS, JAMES J. FLANAGAN, AND ANNA FLANAGAN. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS SISTER, MARJORIE FLANAGAN OF WANAQUE, N.J., AND HIS BROTHERS JOHN P. FLANAGAN AND HIS WIFE EILEEN, RED BANK, N.J., JOSEPH M. FLANAGAN, AND HIS WIFE JEANETTE OF HILLSDALE, N.J. HE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY HIS NEPHEWS, MARC, DAN, AND HIS WIFE RITA; SEAN FLANAGAN, AND WIFE DONNA; HIS NIECES, SIOBHAN SAMUEL AND HUSBAND TIMOTHY; DEIRDRE WARD, AND HUSBAND JOSEPH; AILEEN DAVIS, AND NOREEN FLANAGAN. HE WAS PARTICULARLY FOND OF HIS GRANDNIECES AND GRANDNEPHEWS, TIMOTHY, PATRICK, BRENDAN, AND AISLINN SAMUEL; JOSEPH, KEVIN, PATRICK, MAEVE, AND TERENCE WARD; RILEY AND OWEN FLANAGAN; AND WADE, SHEA, EVAN, AND JOHN PATRICK DAVIS.
