Obituary of Velia G. Bauso
Velia Gloria Bauso, passed away peacefully on the evening of February 13th.
She was born and raised in Bayonne, NJ. where she lived with her extended Italian family until age nineteen. She lived in a building on 26th Street that her immigrant father, Giovanni Pellegrini purchased after immigrating from Villa Santa Maria, Naples, Italy with his wife Antionette and two eldest children. Velia was born in 1931 in that very house. Her most cherished moments were of growing up there surrounded by her Italian aunts, uncles and cousins who all came over from Italy sponsored by Giovanni. From birth she had an especially strong relationship to her cousin Angie who grew up with her in the same house and they were like sisters throughout her life.
Velia met Philip Bauso in high school and they got married when she was nineteen. The couple took a three room apartment in the house and after four of her five children were born they moved to the Jersey shore away from the extended family, which she said felt "like moving to another country”. She worked various jobs that kept her close to home including being the crossing guard in front of her house and a phone registrar for a Saturday enrichment program for kids. After she got her drivers license at age 45 she worked at Brookdale Community College Testing Center. She managed to beat cancer three times and she had many friends who cared about her. She volunteered for Deborah for many years and was on a bowling team. She was a great home seamstress, making clothing for her kids and grandkids along with various curtains and assorted domestic projects. In her later years she loved seeing and spending time with her grandkids, sewing and baking with them and taking them to the pool at her retirement community in Wall Twp. In her most recent years she enjoyed walking the Jersey boardwalk.
Velia is survived by daughter Lisa, son in law Joe Rojas, daughter Marie, son John, daughter in law Tish and grandchildren Isabella and Maximo Giovanni. Velia is pre deceased by her husband Philip and two sons, Philip Jr. and Leonard.
