Obituary of Norma T. Christiansen
Norma Taylor Christiansen, 88, of Colts Neck passed away peacefully at home the morning of December 26, 2013. Born on a farm in Cape May, NJ in 1925, she was the second of four children born to Norman Taylor and Ella Mae Douglass Taylor. She graduated as valedictorian of her HS class and went to Rutgers University (then NJ College for women, nee Douglas College) where she graduated with a BS in Home Economics/ Education in 1947. She met her future husband, Charles H. Christiansen, while performing with a college musical group called the Weepies. They were married on December 26, 1947, in the midst of a huge snowstorm, and had 3 children before divorcing in 1981. Together they had three children who were raised in Colonia, Metuchen, and eventually Colts Neck where Norma continued to live for over 40 years. Norma had a lifelong interest in the natural world. Her collection of shells and rocks are scattered around her house in every nook and on every window sill. She also loved to travel and experience other cultures. She was a passionate reader of the New York Times and maintained a curiosity about world activities until her death. She taught Home Economics at Freehold Boro HS for 23 years and later volunteered at Collier Youth Services until her health declined. Norma is predeceased by her two sisters, Mary Childs and June Norris. Her brother, Eugene Taylor and his wife Anna Ruth, are currently living in Jenkintown, Pa. She is survived by her three children: her daughter Jaya Judy of Colts Neck; her daughter Pamela MacFarlane and her husband David of Barrington, RI; and son Taylor and his wife Sandra of Tryon, NC. In addition she is survived by 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 4, from 12 to 2 at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel, NJ. A memorial service will be conducted at 1pm. All who attend are encouraged to share their memories and thoughts during the service.
