We knew Jim through Bell Labs, canoeing, and Sam Smith. Our daughter has a kayak Jim built and Gail benefited greatly from his help and encouragement when she was researching Molly Pitcher. All this many years ago. But we remember Jim fondly.

As a neophyte to New Jersey's Revolutionary War history and as one of many advocates for the state's history, I never failed to be impressed by Jim's encyclopedic knowledge and his passion. No doubt he is putting his deep intelligence and activism to good effect in a better place, much to the Garden State's loss.

My recollection of Jim is that he was always doing something unusual. The last time I saw him, Joan and I found ourselves on the same 5th Avenue bus as Jim and Fran; they were going, if memory serves me correctly, to examine some architectural feature of Saint John Divine, while Joan and I were doing something much more mundane, such as going to the New York Public Library. Jim was always doing something, and enjoying life to the fullest.

I will miss Jim's tireless and often combative engagement in public issues about New Jersey history, and his irreverence to authority and power. I will also cherish the memory of our close working relationship as successive presidents of the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey. He had a strong mind and a great heart, and he did much to preserve and teach New Jersey and American history.

Too many memories with the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield to share here. Jim was a smart, decent guy, tireless advocate for the Friends, and a good, loyal friend. I'll miss him.
