Lois J. Mortenson, 70, of Holmdel, N.J. passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Bayshore Community Hospital after a seven year battle with cancer. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1965 with a degree in elementary education and taught in Minnesota until 1969 when she moved to New Jersey. In New Jersey she taught in Nursery schools and served as a teacher's aide and/or substitute teacher in the Holmdel and Mountain Lakes school districts. Lois taught Sunday School at the Community Church of Mountain Lakes from 1969 to 1989 and at the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ from 1990 to 2012. She loved working with preschool and early elementary aged children. She also had a love of reading, fiction and nonfiction, in books and in newspapers. Lois was predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Vera Anderson of Minneapolis. She is survived by her husband Robert of Holmdel, daughters Stefanie of Alexandria, Va. and Jennifer of Hoboken, NJ, son Peter and his wife Beth of Brick, NJ, brother Harvey Anderson of Philadelphia, Pa, and grandchildren Madyn and Nolan. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ located at 40 W. Main Street (Newman Springs Road), Holmdel, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lois's memory to the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ building fund.
