Obituary of William M. O'Doherty

MARYS R.C.CHURCH, Highway 34 at Phalanx Road, Colts Neck. William Michael O'Doherty 74, died on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Jersey Shore Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in Limerick City, Ireland and was the second oldest son to Joseph and Mary O'Doherty. Educated at the Irish Christian Brothers School in Limerick, Bill actively participated for 12 years with the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland. He immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1957 and a year later came to the United States where he married the lovely Freda O'Sullivan of Limerick, Ireland in Cedar Knolls, NJ. Bill worked for Allied Chemical in Morristown and in 1966 moved to Old Bridge where he worked for Component Technology for 40 years as a Production Manager. Bill was an active executive board member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Jersey Shore, and in 1997 he was awarded the St. Brendan the Navigator Award. He was also a member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh in Old Bridge having served as adjutant to the Belmar Parade, and was a member of the Executive Board. He was a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Knights of Columbus Council 4815 and raised funds for the St. John of God School for Special Children in Stillorgan, Dublin and Westfield Grove, New Jersey. Bill was a man of deep religious conviction, and an active member of St. Mary's Church in Colts Neck for over 20 years as an Usher and Fundraiser. Ever devoted to his heritage, he loved Irish music. Bill enjoyed spending summers at the beach with his family and traveling abroad. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary O'Doherty, and brother Joseph Patrick O'Doherty. Bill was a devoted Husband, Father, Brother and Grandfather and is survived by his wife of 52 years Freda, 5 daughters and son-in-laws, Susan and Neal Brunner of Howell, Catherine and David Runkel of Howell, Maureen and Eric Schaefer of Howell, Florence and Kevin Swan of Freehold, and Deirdre and Alberto Morello of Colts Neck, 2 brothers Eric and Jim, sister Kitty Hendricks. Bill was the proud grandfather of 13 beautiful grandchildren, Siobhan, William, Sean, Conor, David, Emily, Melanie, Kerri, Brendan, Brian, Meghan, Michela, and Isabella.
