Obituary of William J. Shields
William James Shields, 78 of Holmdel, NJ passed away on Friday October 1, 2010. Born in Coatbridge, Scotland, Bill began his career at Corby Steelworks in England in 1953. In 1960, he joined Llanwern Steelworks in Newport, Wales. Bill immigrated to North America in 1966 when he joined Sidney Steel in Sidney, Nova Scotia, Canada. In 1968 he joined Newfoundland Steel based in St. John’s, Newfoundland where he lived for five years before moving to Whitby, Ontario in 1973 when he became Vice-President of Ferrco, a division of Co-Steel. Bill moved to New Jersey in 1979 to serve as the President of Raritan River Steel Co. He later became the Chairman and CEO of Co-Steel Inc before retiring in 1997. He is a current member of the Board of Directors of Insteel Industries. Bill was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church in Holmdel. He was a longstanding member of the Navesink Country Club. He was the Co-founder and former President of the Colonel David B. Kelly Foundation and a great friend of the New Jersey State Police. Bill was predeceased by his parents William and Catherine, brother Patrick and son-in-law James Cash. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Mary; son Bill and his wife Sue, of Plymouth, MI; three daughters Jacqueline Cash, of Aurora, OH, Moira and Katie Shields, both of New York City; brother Jerry and his wife Susan and sister-in-law Lala Shields all of Kilmacrennan, Ireland; and 4 grandchildren, Ryan and Hayley Cash, and Billy and Bobby Shields. Visitation will be held at the Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 South Holmdel Road, Holmdel on Monday, October 4th from 4:00 to 8:00PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, October 5th, 9:00AM at St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church in Holmdel. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown, NJ. Donations may be made in Bill Shields’ name to the Colonel David B. Kelly Foundation 116 North Broadway, South Amboy, NJ 08879 or to the Parker House Family Health Center, 211 Shrewsbury Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701. We will all miss him very much.
