Obituary of Horace C. DeCotiis
HORACE 'DUKE' DE COTIIS, DPM AGE 77 - HOLMDEL Duke DeCotiis, age 77, died on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at Bayshore Community Hospital. Duke was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1932 to Horace and Filomena DeCotiis. He went on to graduate from Syracuse University and the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Duke practiced in New York City and was active in his professional association as both the President of the New York County and New York State Podiatric Medical Societies. He left his successful practice to become the President of his Alma Mater, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. While there he worked not only for the good of the school but for the community as well – earning awards for his dedication to improving the health of the residents of Harlem where the school was located. During his time at the College, he also served as President of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine. His love of the profession ultimately led him to launch degree programs in Podiatric Medicine at Barry University in Miami, Florida, at the Universidad de Madrid, and in Montreal, Canada. Duke was also very dedicated to his community. He worked tirelessly to keep Holmdel thriving, serving on the Board of Education as well as the Board of Health. He has also held various leadership positions in Monmouth County and the Holmdel Republican Club. He will also be remembered by his friends in the Holmdel Stags. Most important to Duke were his family and friends. His life was rich with both. Duke is survived by his wife Millie, his sons Chris and Mark, their wives; Patricia and Michelle, and his three grandchildren – Marina, Gabrielle and Anthony. He has also left behind sisters and brothers in-law, nieces and nephews, cousins and many, many dear friends - friends whom Duke would have told you had become like family to him.
