Obituary of Winifred A. Mallard

Winifred A. Mallard, 95, passed away February 27, 2017, in Monmouth Care Center, Long Branch, NJ, following several years of declining health. She was a beloved wife and mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, loving aunt, and faithful friend to many. Born and raised in Danville, Ill, “Winnie” was the seventh of eight children of John F. Carey and Rosa Whipple Carey. She worked in office management positions in Danville and Chicago before moving to NJ as a newlywed. She and her husband, Stephen A. Mallard, resided in Jersey City and Hoboken, before settling in Nutley, where they made their home for 55 years. In 2009, they moved to Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, NJ, where Stephen passed away in 2014. In 2016, Winnie moved to Bayside Manor, Keansburg, NJ. After her marriage, Winnie became a homemaker, dedicating her life to caring for her husband and family. She enjoyed frequent shopping expeditions with her friend, Helen Kohler, and trips down the shore or “out to lunch” with her mother-in-law, Gertrude Mallard. She and her husband Steve were avid theater goers. They also enjoyed many wonderful trips, travelling throughout the United States and abroad. Winnie was a caring person who gave generously of her time to help others. As a young mother she nursed her invalid mother, and later in life, lovingly cared for her aged mother-in-law. Over the years, she also was a dedicated volunteer, serving as a Girl Scout leader, and a “play lady” for pediatric patients at St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark. For many years she was a loyal volunteer for the Red Cross blood bank drives in Nutley, helping to organize volunteers and provide lunch for donors. A devout Catholic, Winnie also belonged to the Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Church, Nutley, where she and Steve were faithful communicants. Winnie was pre-deceased by her husband, Stephen A. Mallard, her parents John and Rosa Carey, and her siblings: Loretto O’Connell, Thomas Carey, Sr. Rose Amelia (Marjorie) Carey CSC, Rev. Fr.
